5 Tips for Walking Your Dog in Winter

0
walk dog winter

walk dog winter

When it is cold during the winter months, it can be hard to find the motivation to take your dog out for a walk.

Particularly if the area where you live is prone to snow, ice or just very cold winds. However, skipping out on winter walks is not ideal for your dog’s physical health and mental well-being.

When you don’t take a dog out, even for short walks, you are robbing them of their chance to expel a lot of that pent-up energy they have. If they can’t get a release from walking, they vent it in less desirable ways. This may include barking, and causing destruction to furniture and other parts of your home you’d rather they left alone.

Which is why we wanted to give you a helping hand with these great winter dog walking safety tips, so that you and your four-legged friend stay safe.

Keep Their Feet Warm

Whether there is actual snow on the ground or it is just below freezing temperatures, it is a good idea to invest in dog booties for your canine buddy when you are taking them out. There is also the fact that when the weather is cold, they might be walking on ice melters or salts that can be dangerous for them. Ideally, you should look for booties that have bottoms that offer secure traction and straps made from Velcro to ensure they sit snugly on their feet. You can help get your dog used to the booties by teaching him or her to associate them with treats.

Protect Your Dog’s Bare Paws

Some dogs just don’t get on with booties, but don’t worry. There are alternatives in the form of gels that can be placed directly onto the pads to give them protection against the harshness wintertime. Petroleum jelly is another, more cost-effective alternative that does a similar job.

Invest in a Good Dog Coat

You wouldn’t walk in the open on a cold day without adequate protection for your body in the form of a jacket. The same is true of dogs. Waterproof dog coats are important for protecting your furry friend from the elements. Look for one that is not only built to deal with the low temperatures and repel moistures.

Make Sure You Use a Good Quality Strong Leash

Obviously, an important accessory you need for your dog when walking him or her is a leash and collar. If your dog is boisterous or pulls a lot, this can be a problem on slippery ground. Therefore, a harness with a front clip can minimise any pulling.

Don’t Expect Too Much

It is important to remember that it is different for your dog, walking them during winter than it is during warmer parts of the day. You need to be careful then to not expect more than your dog is capable in less friendly conditions. If it is a puppy, then you should train them to walk with a leash when conditions are more favourable.

Sheepadoodle: A Full Guide on the Teddy Bear Dog Breed

0

With a teddy bear face and a cuddly personality, Sheepadoodles are a dream for many people.

But they’re not for all people.

If you’re considering getting a sheepadoodle, you’ll need to know a few things before deciding if it’s the right breed for you.

In this guide, we’ll go over the sheepadoodle’s personality, stats, their mini breed, pros and cons and what you need to ask yourself before getting one.

About Sheepadoodles: An Overview

Sheepadoodles are a cross between a Poodle an Old English Sheepdog. Depending on which traits they inherited from their parents, they make take on a variety of looks and personality characteristics.

They tend to be super friendly, obedient and high-energy.

Luckily, they don’t shed a lot. Their coats can be curly or straight, depending on which they take after more: the poodle side or the old English sheepdog. Still, you’ll need to do a bit of grooming. Since their hair can cover their eyes, you’ll need to cut around that area once it grows in. Their coat can be black or white or a combination of both with spots. Because of this pattern, puppies can tend to look like little panda bears. Some sheepadoodles can have red, brown or grey color; however, this is less common.

They also tend to be good for people who usually have allergies to dogs. Runny nose and watery eyes are less likely to be triggered with this hypoallergenic dog breed.

Sheepadoodles have a shorter lifespan than some breeds, living until 12 years on average. Although, some may surpass that until 15 years.

They are relatively healthy dogs and aren’t prone to many diseases. Although they are genetically more at risk for joint swelling and Addison’s disease and some cancers.

As with every other dog, they need daily exercise. A backyard is best, but if not, daily walks will suffice.

Sheepadoodles are costly if you purchase a pup from a breeder. However, if you rescue a dog from a shelter, you’ll only need to pay the adoption and other relevant fees.

When you purchase any puppy, you should learn about the breeder and what conditions the dogs are raised in. Unfortunately, puppy mills are still popular and you don’t want to support them. If you don’t know what puppy mills are, you should learn about them here.

If you want to rescue a dog, you can check to see if any local shelters have sheepadoodles. If they don’t, you can always ask if they can contact you if they ever have one available for adoption. You can also check sites such as Petfinder and Rescue Dogs Match.

Sheepadoodle Personality

A sheepadoodle’s personality depends on the individual dog and can vary based on the temperament of their parents and on how you raise them.

They can be great in families with children because they’re generally really friendly and calm with low aggression. They also are sociable and like being around people. They are obedient, so they shouldn’t be overly difficult to train as long as you’re consistent.

They also tend to be intelligent, so they should be quick to learn. Their obedience also can make training easier than other breeds.

Sheepadoodles are usually quite playful and love to run around the yard, take a long walk in the country or swim in the lake. But they’ll also need some mental stimulation too—so make sure you make them use their brains.

Should You Get a Sheepadoole?

Before you go ahead and get a sheepadoodle, think about these questions below.

  • Do you live in an apartment or house?—If you live in a small apartment or condo, you may want to consider a smaller breed. Although a sheepadoodle might be okay in an apartment, they will enjoy more room to move around exercise. They will benefit most from a house with a backyard.
  • Do you have a family?—Since sheepadoodles are friendly and social, they are a good dog to have if you have a large family or tend to have a lot of friends over. They also have low aggression levels.
  • Do you have allergies?—If so, the sheepadoodle can be a good choice. They are mostly hypoallergenic and don’t shed a lot. However, check with the specific breeder how hypoallergenic the dog will be based on their parents.
  • Want a clean-ish house?—If you’re one that wants to keep your house really clean, sheepadoodles can be a good choice because they don’t shed as much as other breeds.
  • Are you active?— Sheepadoodles aren’t the highest energy breed, but they sure love their exercise and are very playful. If you’re someone that enjoys long walks, you’ll be a good fit for the sheepadoodle.

If you’re reading this and have decided that Sheepadoole is the right dog breed for your home, you should consider adopting or rescuing a dog in need.

How to Stop Your Dog From Eating His Poop

5 Easy Steps to End This Dirty Habit

We love to brag about our dogs. In fact, in many ways they’re like our own children. There are some canine habits, however, that we really prefer not to bring up in polite conversation. One of these is when our dogs eat their own poop. Yes, it’s a disgusting practice to us humans, but dogs have their reasons. It’s actually fairly common and has a name, coprophagia. A great pooper scooper service can help curb the problem, but what are some steps you can take to stop your dog from eating his poop? Here are 5 things to try.

#1 Clean Up Quickly

This advice applies to both a dogs living area and walks. Keep their living area clean and free of feces. If a dog has an accident, remove it immediately. This is also for cat boxes, as dogs sometimes choose their feline companions poops over their own.

#2 Training

The number one commands you should work on for a dog with this problem are “leave it” and “come”. Experts recommend teaching your dog to come for a treat immediately after elimination. This gives them a tasty incentive, instead of going for something on the ground that is decidedly unpleasant. The most important thing is to make sure you put a stop to any investigation or sniffing by giving a firm command.

It might be helpful to make a diary of when your dog has its daily bowel movements. Make sure  you go outside with her, watch for the elimination, and quickly call your dog back to you. Have your dog immediately sit and give her a reward. Then clean up the poop before she has any chance to investigate.

#3 Mindful Walks

While out for walks, pick up after your dog quickly and don’t allow them the opportunity to eat the poop. Always have your dog on a leash during a walk, and be mindful of when he may come across another dog’s poop. A gentle head harness will help you keep control of your dog and where he sticks his nose.

#4 Taste-Aversion Products

Believe it or not, some things are as disgusting to our canine friends as eating poop is to us. If you spray certain things on your dog,s poop or add it to their food, it will make it much less appealing. You can find these products in pet shops, or you may just have them around the house.

Items you can put in a dogs food include chamomile, derivatives of pepper plants, garlic, parsley, canned pumpkin, pineapple juice, meat tenderizer with MSG, and spinach. Things you can sprinkle directly on the feces include bitter apple, lemon juice, or hot sauce.

#5 Dietary Supplements

Sometimes, coprophagia is caused by an enzyme deficiency in their digestive system. This is called exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, or EPI, and a veterinarian can diagnose this problem. In this case, your poop eating problem may be cured by dietary enzyme supplements. These supplements break down enzymes in the dogs stomach, help them absorb the proper nutrients, and help them digest their food properly.

If dogs are fed low-quality food, they may eat feces to try to balance out what they sense as a dietary deficiency. A lack in Vitamin-B has also been shown to cause dogs to eat feces. They can be given vitamin supplements to balance their diet.

You can do a lot more than look on in horror when your dog starts eating his own poop. Try the tips above, and be sure to contact the DC area’s pooper scooper experts to find the best solutions for pet waste removal.

Whether it’s helping bring in the groceries or fetching the mail, this dog can be a huge help.

Caring for Dogs Living in the Backyard

Caring for dogs living in the backyard

Any pet whether small, medium, large or extra-large in size, entirely depends on their owners for its daily comfort and protection from the many dangers outside, like wild animals, dog thieves, malicious neighbours, stray dogs and inclement weather such as wind, rain or snow.

Make Your Dog’s Safety a Top Priority

Dogs living outside the home need shelter and a comfortable place to sleep and feed. If there is no service area, garage or covered porch, the owner should arrange a small house for your pet.

Having an outside area in the house, in which your dog can exercise and play, is also highly recommended by veterinarians. According to experts, the best option is to build a kennel and dog run, which will serve as the dog’s exclusive space, where it will have a bed, food, toys and resting area.

A kennel can give your beloved companion comfort and safety during containment.

For a safe and comfortable outdoor space, it is also important for the dog to have a clean and dry outdoor area for sunbathing and exercising. This well-planned and hygienic space should be divided between a paved area (rough floor) and grass, as it provides them with more mobility. The most suitable material for the construction of dog runs is galvanised steel.

Protect Your Landscaping and Your Dog’s Health

If the outside area has flowers and plants, you should know that some of them can be highly toxic to your pet. Among the plants that can bring serious health problems to your canine friend are the Sword of Saint George and Azalea.

In that case, a dog kennel can protect your dog from any kind of harm and keep your landscape looking beautiful and fresh.

Just remember that having a great outdoor space for your beloved pet does not replace the need for walks, attention, and affection.
