You’re Cooling Off Your Dog WRONG! Here’s What Works

If it’s a hot day and your dog is panting, your first instinct may be to splash him with water.

However, where you splash the water matters.

As dog expert Cesar Millan explains in the video above, the best place is on her chest. If a dog uses water to cool herself off, she’s more likely to wet her chest first, not her back. Reaching under your dog to splash water is more likely to cool them off in a relaxing way.

5 Important Things To Consider When Choosing A Pet Vacuum Cleaner

You may have a pet-friendly home, but keeping your home fresh and clean with your furry pet can be challenging.

Inevitably, pet hair winds up everywhere and makes a living space dirty. If any householder has asthma or allergy issues then pet hair and dander can make it worse.

Fortunately, taking good care of your pet along with proper vacuuming of the house can make things better. Luckily, there are best vacuums for pet hair which are of high-quality designed specifically for those who have pets at home.

Vacuuming daily will not only remove pet hairs, but reduce allergens and improve the overall air quality of the house. However, any vacuum cleaner is not the solution.

Here are a few things which you need to consider before buying the pet vacuum cleaner:

  • Flooring and layout: To purchase the best pet vacuum consider the type of layout and flooring you have. If you have hardwood floors and tiles then choose a model designed specifically for cleaning such type of floor. You need one with a great suction else it may be unable to trap the furs properly.

  • Carpets and rugs: If you have carpets and rugs then you need a vacuum which has great suction, and a rotating brush will help to pull the pet hair from carpet with ease. The process of getting the fur out of carpet depends on the type of pet you have. So, considering these two characteristics in a vacuum cleaner is a must. Take care because rotating brush is good for carpets, but not for hardwood floors. Look closely at the various models to choose the best pet vacuum which can clean the pet hair from everywhere, but at the same time doesn’t destroy your assets.

  • Vacuum cleaner height and weight: You should invest in a model that can adjust its height and when it comes to vacuuming stairs, you should be able to lift the vacuum easily. A fairly light model will reduce the risk of falling as well. You should also be able to use the attachments like an extension hose. You can attach a small brush to it and efficiently vacuum the carpet.

  • High quality filter: Filtration is one important reason to prefer bagged machines over bagless. Vacuum bags work like a filter and if it is fabric made then it is better. It will keep all the furs and dust even when there is a need to replace them. When you replace the complete bag then there will be no possibility of fur left behind in the machine which can stink later.Technically there are two filters and the primary one is premotor which prevents the dust and debris to enter the motor else it would stink or overheat the motor. Premotor helps to protect the motor. The post motor filter will make a great difference and if it is HEPA filter then it will prevent any dust or carbon to mix in the air. Choose the one with high quality filter.

  • Budget: It is easy to buy a cheap vacuum cleaner anywhere, but when it comes to capturing the pet fur, a cheap machine will not do any good. It can work properly for some time and then it will clog the fur. Maintaining it will be more costly and you may even end up buying a new vacuum machine. So, get the best as per your needs.

There are so many vacuum cleaners available in the market that sometimes it becomes difficult to make a choice. Some can be convenient, but not efficient. The choice will also depend on the type of pet you have. Some pets shed more furs whereas some do not shed so much. There are different breeds so some are considered to be non-allergic as well. Also, buy a vacuum cleaner from a legitimate company. Buying any cheap quality vacuum will not resolve the purpose.

So, analyze as per the different factors mentioned above and assess the features of the best vacuums for pet hair to make a perfect choice.

4 Must-Know Tips Every First-Time Dog Owner Should Read

If you’re about to adopt your first-ever pet, congratulations, you’ve made a decision that will most likely bring you decades of happiness.

Caring for an animal companion is one of life’s great pleasures. Taking the plunge into pet ownership for the first time can be overly exciting, however, and some people think that they don’t really need to know anything before they bring their little guy or gal home. It can’t be that hard, right?

Well, it’s not exactly hard, but it can be complicated if you don’t know some basics of pet ownership. Here are some essential tips for the first-time pet owner.

Eliminate the Unexpected

When it comes to making sure you and your new dog are copasetic, it’s vital to establish routines and introduce structure into their life as soon as possible.

One way to do this is to make sure your dog has established ground rules from day one. Sure, it might be cute to let your new dog lie on the couch with you, but if you don’t want a couch dog for the long term, then you should never allow this — not even on day one. You should try, as best as you can, to make your dog eat, sleep, go outside, and exercise at the same time every day. By doing this, you can help avoid household accidents and a rambunctious dog when it’s time for human sleep.

“Dogs need order. Let your pet know from the start who is the boss. When you catch them doing something they shouldn’t, don’t lose your cool. Stay calm, and let them know immediately, in a loud and disapproving voice, that they have misbehaved. Reward them with praise when they do well,” says the Humane Society.

Get Your House Ready

Before you bring your new friend home, stock up on some important items. Make sure you have food and water dishes (as well as food and water), toys, and a good leash for your daily walks –  you don’t want your pal getting away from you during your outdoor adventures. Lastly, don’t underestimate the importance of a good dog bed in a safe place, since your dog is most vulnerable when it’s sleeping. Make sure your pooch feels as safe and comfortable as possible in your home while catching up on his much-needed rest.

Don’t Give Your New Dog Too Much Range

Keeping with the structure theme, it’s vital that your new dog has a designated “safe space” in their new home — at least for the beginning. Giving your dog free run of your entire house can not only lead to poor behavior, but it can also be unsettling for a dog. This is especially important if you adopt an older dog, who may take quite a bit of time to get acclimated to a new setting. It’s also especially important if you have existing pets. It lets the meeting process happen slowly and reduces the risk of conflicts.

“When the established dog is present, keep the new dog confined, but able to see, smell, and hear the established dog so they can communicate.  This will also give you a chance to observe their interactions to get an idea of how they are adjusting to each other’s presence,” suggests ReachOutRescue.org.

The Bonding Begins Immediately

“Love is what makes your dog dance when you come home at the end of the day, while the bond is what keeps him from taking off without you when the front door opens,” says the Bark.

Every dog is different, but there are some pretty universal ways to make sure you develop a bond with your dog that lasts a lifetime. Most dog-owner relationships that are subpar suffer from a few common problems. First, the owner doesn’t give the dog enough attention and praise. Second, the owner doesn’t exercise and play with the dog enough. And third, the owner attempts to “punish” the dog for bad behaviors instead of simply and firmly correcting them.

Maybe the best overall rule for first-time pet ownership is to practice patience at all times. Dogs pick up on aggression, fear, and frustration. If you are calm and collected, your dog will be calm and collected as well.

The Labrador Retriever continues to break records!  The American Kennel Club (AKC®) announced at a press conference today that the loveable Lab once again is the number one most popular breed in the United States.

While the Labrador Retriever remains a constant at the top of the charts, the big mover and shaker in 2017 was the French Bulldog.  The easygoing, playful, adaptable Frenchie not only jumped two spots to number four, it knocked the Beagle out of the top five for the first time since 1998.

“The Labrador Retriever has its paws firmly planted in Americans’ hearts,” said AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo.

“It’s such a versatile and family friendly breed.  Don’t underestimate the power of the Frenchie, though!  Its adaptability and loveable temperament make it very appealing to a wide variety of people.  The French Bulldog is poised for a takeover.”

In addition to the country’s most popular, rare breeds were on the rise in 2017.  The Norwegian Buhund rose four spots (174th to 170th), Skye Terriers rose six spots (178th to 172nd), Canaan Dogs jumped six spots (181st to 175th), and Harriersrose three spots (186th to 183rd).
