266 dogs are competing for the honor of being named 2018’s American Hero Dog, the highest honor a dog can receive.

But it’s now up to America to decide which of those dogs will take home that coveted prize.

Dog lovers across the country are invited to visit www.herodogawards.org and vote once per day for their favorite dogs in each of seven categories. Following the first round of voting, which ends April 25 with the selection of 21 semifinalists (the top three in each category), a second round, featuring a combination of public and celebrity voting, will narrow the field to the seven category finalists.

“Our best friends do so much to improve and even save our lives, and every dog owner knows about the extraordinary, unbreakable bond they share with their dog,” says Dr. Robin Ganzert, American Humane’s president and CEO.

The winning dog in each category will be flown to Los Angeles and celebrated at a red carpet, star-studded awards gala on September 29, when this year’s American Hero Dog will be revealed.

The seven categories for 2018 are:

  • Law Enforcement/Arson Dogs, sponsored by the K-9 Courage Program from Zoetis
  • Military Dogs, sponsored by the K-9 Courage Program from Zoetis and the Lois Pope LIFE Foundation
  • Therapy Dogs, sponsored by Chicken Soup for the Soul Pet Food, the official pet food of the 2018 Hero Dog Awards
  • Service Dogs, sponsored by Modern Dog magazine
  • Emerging Hero DogsSearch and Rescue Dogs
  • Guide/Hearing Dogs. Zoetis is the corporate presenting sponsor of the Hero Dog Awards.
  • Over the past seven years, Americans have cast millions of votes for more than a thousand dogs, all seeking the coveted title of American Hero Dog.

The program reaches more than 1 billion people each year and draws the support and participation of top celebrity dog lovers from all over the world.

Winners in each category will earn $2,500 for their designated charity partner and the overall winner’s charity partner will win an additional $5,000 prize.

Key dates for the 2018 American Humane Hero Dog Awards contest include:

  • Nominations: October 25, 2017 – February 14, 2018
  • 1st Round Voting: February 28, 2018 – April 25, 2018
  • 2nd Round Voting: May 16, 2018 – July 11, 2018
  • 3rd Round Voting: July 25, 2018  September 5, 2018

Cannabis Pain Relief for Dogs? This Product is An Alternative to Opioids

Phyto Animal Health announced that it will reveal its latest cannabidiol (CBD) pet product, Phyto Animal Health VITALITY 1700 mg CBD Oral Concentrate.

This new supplement will only be available to veterinary clinicians and animal hospitals.

The national opioid drug shortage is challenging both human and animal patient pain management.

“The beauty of CBD is its myriad of uses, including as a natural pain management assistant, and its huge margin of safety, making it a great adjunct to veterinarian-prescribed treatment regiments,” says Liz Hughston, MEd. and an executive member of the Phyto Animal Health Expert Veterinary Advisory Board.

In the next few months, veterinary clinicians will be facing significant shortages of opioid medications, such as morphine, after the FDA’s 25 percent decrease in the production of Schedule II opioid medications in 2017. With another 20 percent proposed reduction in 2018, veterinarians may need to alter their normal pain management protocols with more natural alternatives.

Phyto Animal Health has specially formulated its VITALITY 1700 mg CBD Oral Concentrate as a natural health and wellness supplement that helps support recovery so pets can rest comfortably.

Extracted using super critical CO2 and Triple Lab Tested™, this product is naturally abundant in CBD, as well as vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, terpenes, and other trace cannabinoids. Each VITALITY CBD Oral Concentrate tube contains 1700 mg (17%) of decarboxylated CBD in its unfiltered oil, retaining the raw hemp’s nutritional value while maximizing CBD content.

5 Basic Must-Teach Commands: Dog Training Denver

dog training, basic commands, dog training denver

Getting a new puppy is exciting! Everything is new for you and her and every day she seems to be learning something different. But, what should she be learning? The level in which you’d like to train her is your choice as an owner, but there are a couple basic commands she should learn as soon as she can.

There’s a few tricks you can likely teach your dog at home, but others may be more difficult. If you have a problematic pup who can’t seem to sit still long enough to learn a trick, you may need to hire a professional. At the end of this post, we will discuss options to consider if you’re having trouble teaching your pup.

Whether you’re looking for dog training in Denver or any other state, help is available.

#1: Sit

This one is usually the easiest trick to start dog training. You can start off teaching him this command when you’re going to give him a treat. When he learns it, he will be able to do it anytime you need him to.

Here’s how:

#2: Lay

After you teach your pup to sit, you should teach him how to lay down.

Here’s how:

#3: Stay

Teaching your dog to stay is a super important command. Once he learns this, you will be able to stop him from getting too hyper, bad behaviour and running away off leash.

Here’s how:

#4: Come

Teaching your dog to come here will be helpful if he ever tries to run away. But it can also be useful every day. Whenever you haven’t seen your pup in awhile and you know he’s getting into something in your house, calling “come” will easily solve the problem.

Here’s how:

#5: No

Just like kids, dogs also need to learn the word NO! To him, no will mean stop. But there’s a lot of controversy on whether if you should use this word or use a different word. To decide if you should use this word, watch the video below.

Here’s how:

Professional Help

If you’ve tried the above methods and you can’t seem to teach your dog basic commands, it may be time to enlist the help of a professional trainer. Keep in mind that it’s not that your dog is untrainable, he just may need a teacher who is more experienced.

Other reasons you may want to hire a dog trainer include:

  • Your dog is destructive
  • Your dog has issues with barking
  • Your dog displays inappropriate and embarrassing behavior
  • You get annoyed or frustrated when trying to teach your dog

Reasons why professional dog training works:

  • Some trainers come to your home to teach your dog (such as Dog Training Denver). Dogs learn more quickly and are less stressed in their own environments.
  • Training goes beyond just teaching your dog a trick. You’ll learn patterns of communication and interpretation.
  • Unlike other methods, good trainers won’t use force or pain to teach your dog.
  • While YouTube videos can help you teach your dog a certain trick, they often do not target your dog’s specific problems. A trainer can assess your personal situation and develop a plan that will improve your dog’s behavior at large for the long-run.

Dog Easter Egg Hunt: Tips

Stick to Area

To keep things manageable, stick to one room to create your dog Easter hunt. The living room is likely the best spot and where your dog is used to hanging out anyways.

If you’re doing the Easter egg hunt outside, try to stick to one area: such as your backyard. You can also choose to do a small hunt in your local park with your dog leashed.

What to Hide

You can hide your dogs treats in plastic Easter egg, however; make sure the eggs are big enough that your dog won’t accidentally swallow it. Another option is to leave the the eggs a little open so the treat will fall out when your dog touches it

Inside the egg, you can place small treats, kibbles or even his morning breakfast. If you want to make his breakfast extra special, divide some plain scrambled eggs among the plastic eggs. Remember: Do not use regular Easter treats for dogs. Chocolates are poisonous to dogs.

If your hunt is outside, hide the eggs behind trees, in small bushes, tall blades of grass or overgrown areas. If your hunt is inside, hide the eggs behind objects or furniture or on top sofas or chairs. Don’t be afraid to challenge them!

How to Do It

Whether you’ve hidden the eggs inside or outside, bring your dog to the first hiding spot and let him sniff around. After he finds the first egg, his nose will continously guide him through the area. When he finds an egg, pick it up for him, open the egg and give him the treat. Remember: Show him enthusiasm, just like you would a child!

Extra Gifts

If you want to be really nice to him that day, you can also purchase a some easter-themed chew toys or Easter dog cookies! There’s also interactive dog Easter toys!

PetScrub (PRNewsfoto/PetScrub)

It could be the best pet invention since the flea collar.

Houston-based startup has launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring to market the world’s first two-in-one de-shedding and shampooing tool for pets. This self-contained device called “PetScrub” combines a gentle brush to remove and vacuum up loose hair, while simultaneously shampooing and conditioning the pet with an atomized water solution which leaves the animal almost completely dry afterwards.

No more hassle of washtubs, brushes, buckets, shampoo bottles and dank towels – and especially no more struggling to get Fido into the water – instead, the pet sits comfortably, just the same as regular brushing.

With PetScrub, the entire process of washing a dog takes less than 10 minutes. It also comes with multiple brush adapters for any size dog.

The Best Unconventional Dog Names 2018

cute unique puppy names

cute unique puppy names

Getting a new dog? We’ve got you covered. Your puppy is special and deserves more than just a stereotypical overused name. They deserve something cute that also is true to their personality. This year leave “Buddy,” “Bella,” and “Scoot” behind for some amazingly unique names.

Naming your dog is likely one of the first things you’ll do when you get him/her. And it’s pretty important. The dog will be identified by this one name for the rest of its life. It’s what you’ll use when you train your dog, how you’ll address him, and how you’ll introduce him to your family/friends.

So, what makes a good name? Dog names should obviously represent the dog’s personality. This is why it’s best to only name your dog AFTER you’ve brought him/her home. You’ll need to get a feel for the dog. Is he spunky? Is he shy? Is he cuddly? Imagine naming a dog Spunky when, in actuality, he’s pretty docile.

Secondly, it’s best to pick names that are short. It’s easier for a dog to understand.

Be realistic. Pick a name that you and your friends can pronounce easily. Make sure the one you choose is the actual name you will call your dog. For example, naming your dog “Harry Potter” might sound cute, but are you really going to yell out, “Come here Harry Potter!” every time you play in the park? Not likely. It will most likely get shortened to Harry– which isn’t a unique name and may not even suit his personality.

It goes without saying, but remember that the name you give your dog is what you’ll have to introduce him as. For this reason, stay away from offensive or controversial names, even if you think they’re funny. You might love calling your dog Ganja, but will you feel comfortable introducing him to neighbours and your family with that name? We’re not saying that a name can’t be edgy, but you need to be smart about it.

Have you named your dog any of these? If you have, email us a pic and we’ll do post about him/her! 🙂

For the good of dogs everywhere, Morris Animal Foundation announced it awarded nearly $1 million in grants for 12 canine research projects.

The studies will help veterinary scientists improve the health and well-being of dogs suffering from deadly and debilitating diseases, including cancer, spinal cord disease and gastrointestinal disorders.

“Dogs are, as the saying goes, man’s best friend, with nearly 90 million in American households,” says Tiffany Grunert, Morris Animal Foundation’s Acting President and CEO.

“They enrich our lives so much and deserve the best care we can provide.”

The donation will go towards research in several areas, including:

  • Blocking Hemangiosarcoma Tumor Growth
Hemangiosarcoma, a malignant cancer of blood vessel cells, is an aggressive disease that is rapidly fatal in dogs. Researchers will investigate ways to block tumor cells from using cholesterol and lipids that fuel tumor growth.
  • Exploring Novel Treatments for IBD
Researchers are looking at changes in gut bacteria that stimulate the immune system in dogs with inflammatory bowel disease to help identify novel ways to diagnose and treat this disease.
  • Investigating Connections between Chemicals and Cancers
Researchers will explore how specific enzymes in dogs break down common environmental chemicals that have been linked to cancers in humans.
  • Imaging to Improve Diagnosis for Neurodegenerative Disorder
Canine degenerative myelopathy (CDM) is a progressive, neurodegenerative disorder that affects the spinal cords of dogs, causing eventual paralysis in the hind legs. Researchers will determine if an advanced MRI technique can be applied to dogs with CDM.
